Tasman Tanning Enhances Wastewater Treatment with HyDAF Technology

April 15, 2025

Tasman Tanning is a leading leather processor based in Whanganui, New Zealand. As trade waste discharge standards became more stringent, the company sought to upgrade its wastewater treatment system to ensure compliance and improve overall environmental performance. With high concentrations of solids and chromium typical of tannery wastewater, Tasman Tanning needed a robust and reliable treatment solution tailored to its unique process.

The Hydroflux Solution

Hydroflux worked closely with Tasman Tanning to deliver a customised wastewater treatment system that met both regulatory and operational needs. The solution centred on the installation of a HyDAF HD-75S Dissolved Air Flotation system coupled with a SAT-450 saturated air tank designed for seismic compliance to Importance Level 2 standards across New Zealand.

The system was complemented by:

  • Reaction tanks for chemical conditioning
  • A HydraBLEND® polymer dosing system
  • A HUBER Q620 screw press for sludge dewatering
Results
  • Approximately 100 tons of wet sludge is removed by the HyDAF
  • This is dewatered to over 35% dry solids in the Huber Screw press to generate 10 tons of dewatered sludge per day representing a 10 fold decrease in sludge volume
  • Over 3 tons of dry solids are now diverted daily from the public sewer system.
  • The upgrade has significantly reduced the load on municipal infrastructure and improved waste handling on-site.
  • The system operates reliably and efficiently, helping Tasman Tanning maintain compliance and improve sustainability outcomes.
Technology in Action

The HyDAF system plays a central role in separating solids from the wastewater, while the HUBER Q620 screw press ensures efficient dewatering. Together, they form a comprehensive treatment solution that aligns with Tasman Tanning’s sustainability goals.

Proven Performance

With well over 100 HyDAF units installed across Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific, Hydroflux continues to deliver high-performance, sustainable wastewater solutions tailored to industrial needs.
