Hydroflux to Upgrade Northern Wastewater Treatment Plant in Cairns

June 18, 2024

The Northern Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) owned and operated by Cairns Water is an advanced treatment facility that utilises a 5 staged Enhanced Biological Phosphorous Removal (EBPR) coupled with membrane filtration. The final effluent produced is of very high quality and the plant can process 19.4 ML/day.

Hydroflux were awarded a contract to replace and upgrade key items within the Biosolids Facility. The upgrade will provide increased redundancy and higher performance of the Biosolids Dewatering System.

As part of the design and build, two new HUBER Q800 Rotary Screw Presses will be installed to dewater the waste activated sludge produced from the wastewater treatment process.

“We have upgraded numerous wastewater plants around Australia and New Zealand using HUBER QPRESS® technology and we offer an integrated system that can include feed, polymer dosing, solids outloading, controls and SCADA. The QPRESS® machines produce a drier cake than the current belt press units, which means big savings in transport costs due to the reduced volume of cake that’s needed to be trucked offsite. And that’s less carbon emissions associated with transport.

Another key benefit based on operator feedback is the low speed of the unit. The internal screw operates at less than 1rpm, resulting in low maintenance requirements and energy demand.

QPRESS® is Climate Active Certified as Carbon Neutral, so this reaffirms our support of a carbon reduction strategy for our product portfolio and our continued efforts to help improve the environmental and sustainability performance of our customers” says Luis Bastos, CEO of Hydroflux Epco.

QPRESS® is a slow speed sludge dewatering technology that can be used in municipal and industrial wastewater applications. It can reduce the volume of liquid sludge by 85 – 90%, which reduces the transport costs.
